Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir Ibn Abdul-Warith

Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir Ibn Abdul-Warith (1): The Maliki jurist and scholar, Sheikh Al-Islam and Qadi al-Quda (Chief Justice of the Highest Court) Muhi Al-Din Abdul-Qadir Bin Al-Najm Abdel-Rahman Bin Abdul-Warith Bin Muhammad Bin Abdul-Warith Bin Abdul-Munim Bin Yahya (also known as Al-Muhyawi Abu Al-Barakat of Egypt and Damascus), was a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq whose ancestry could be traced back to the tribe of Quraysh.

Known as Ibn “Abdul-Warith” (his grandfather’s name), Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir Ibn Abdul-Warith was Qadi al-Quda of the Malikis in Damascus. He was born in Egypt on Thursday, 18 Sha’ban 824 AH. He grew up there and memorized the Qur’an, as well as Mukhtasar Ibn Bashir (a book on hadith and jurisprudence), Al-Minhaj Al-Asli, Al-Mulhah, and other works. He also presented Al-Mudawanah in front of Ibn Ammar, Al-Bisati, and Abi Al-Fath Bin Wafa’.

Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir received knowledge of jurisprudence from Sheikh Ibadah and Sheikh Taher, and learned Al-Bukhari and Al-Muwatta’ under the supervision of Ibn Hajar. He was a master of jurisprudence and its fundamentals, the Arabic language, and other fields of knowledge. He was also an eloquent speaker with a strong memory and a man of great nobility. He was granted permission by more than one scholar to teach, and his fatwas were widely sought out.

Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir was appointed Grand Sufi Sheikh of Egypt’s Al-Naseri Mosque. He was also a deputy leader in Egypt for a while. He was then appointed head-judge of the Maliki judiciary in Damascus. A prominent Maliki scholar with a good reputation, Al-Muhyawi Abdul-Qadir died while still a judge in Damascus in Jumada Al-Thani of either 874 or 904 AH in a classroom in Al-Samsamiah Madrasah, where he lived. His body was prayed over in the Umayyad Mosque. He was then laid to rest in Bab Al-Saghir cemetery next to the tomb of Sayyiduna Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him.
