Ahmed Bin Abi Bakr Al-Raddad

Ahmed Bin Abi Bakr Al-Raddad (1): Abu Al-Abbas Shihab Al-Din Ahmed Bin Abi Bakr Bin ‘Alam Al-Din Muhammad Bin Al-Shihab Bin Al-Raddad of Makkah and Zabid was a Shafi’i judge and Sufi descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq whose ancestry could be traced back to the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh. Known as Ibn Al-Raddad, he was born in Makkah, where he grew up, in either 748 AH (1347 AD) or 747 AH.

Ibn Al-Raddad went to Yemen and stayed in Zabid, where he became close to Al-Ashraf Isma’il. A man of piety and good morals, he became well-renowned, and people sought him out. He became the head-judge of Yemen. A prominent Sufi imam, he also became the head Sufi of Yemen. Al-Sakhawi said of him: “He was too inclined towards the Sufism of the philosophers, so he corrupted the beliefs of the people of Zabid, except for those whom Allah willed otherwise.”

Ibn Al-Raddad authored a number of books, including: Mujibat Al-Rahma wa ‘Aza’im Al-Maghfirah (on the hadith), ‘Uddat Al-Murshidin wa ‘Umdat Al-Mustarshidin fi Ahkam Al-Khirqah wa Al-Nisbah lil Libas wa Al-Suhbah, and Al-Qawa’id Al-Wafiyah fi Asl Khirqat Al-Sufiah. He also wrote two books on Sufism: Mabsut and Mukhtasar. In addition, he wrote poetry as well. Among the poetry attributed to him is:

If everything in the universe belonged to me—

And everything in the universe prostrated to me,

My eyes would pay no heed—

For I am attached to You alone.

Ibn Al-Raddad died on the night of 18 Dhul Qi’dah 821 AH (1418 AD) and was buried next to his sheikh, another Grand Sufi sheikh, under the dome. He had several pious children, the eldest of whom was the righteous sheikh known as Zain Al-‘Abidin, who assumed his father’s position until he was killed unjustly in 825 AH. Sheikh Ahmed Al-Raddad had other blessed descendants known for their piety and righteousness who maintain a well-respected, honorable zawiya.
