Maulana Sultan Walad

Maulana Sultan Walad (1): The Hanafi imam, jurist, and scholar Baha’uddin Ahmed Bin Jalaluddin Muhammad Bin “Sultan Al-‘Ulama” (Sultan of the Scholars) Baha’uddin Muhammad Bin Al-Husayn Bin Muhammad Bin Ahmed Bin Al-Qasim Bin Musayib (or Habib) Bin Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq was from the tribe of Quraysh and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. Known as both Maulana Baha’uddin and Sultan Walad, he was the son of Maulana Jalaluddin Al-Rumi.

Baha’uddin was a noble Hanafi imam as well as a jurist, scholar of usul (the fundamentals of religion), and brilliant grammarian known for his piety. He was an ascetic who performed miracles and had many famous stories narrated about him. He was born around 620 AH. After the death of his father in Konya, he became devoted to teaching the recitation of the Qur’an and other branches of knowledge for a few years. Students benefitted from his teachings, and people came to him from other countries seeking his fatwas. Although he was highly respected by Roman leaders and dignitaries, he did not ever attempt to profit from these relationships. He followed in the footsteps of his father regarding his level of piety, devotion, and asceticism. He died in Konya during Rajab of 712 AH at the age of 92. He was buried next to his father and prayed over by Sheikh Majd Al-Din Al-Aqsra’i as requested in his will. Among his authored works was Walad-Nama, a work of poetry which spoke of his father’s virtues.
