Abu Samaha Bin Abi Laila

Abu Samaha Bin Abi Laila (1): Sidi Muhammad Ibn Al-Tayyib Al-Bushikhi mentioned him, saying: Local sources did not preserve knowledge of the descendants of Sidi Muammar Abi Al-Aalia for us—with the exception of Sidi Aba Samaha Bin Abi Laila, who augmented the nobility of his Bakri-Siddiqi lineage and his ancestors’ leadership of the Hilaliya tribes with his own well-known generosity and honor, creating a new sense of prestige for his descendants and relatives. First known as Bakris, they later became known—after his death—as Samahis, an appellation which can be traced back to the name Sidi Abdul-Qadir Bin Muhammad Al-Samahi would later be called as the focal unifying figure of the Bakri clan in North Africa.

Sidi Abu Samaha died at either the end of the eighth century after the Hijrah, or at the beginning of the ninth century after the Hijrah. He was buried in Toubou, near Charouine, where his tomb is, and an annual festival is held there to commemorate his memory. The only known descendant of his is Sidi Sulaiman Bin Abi Samaha, who is regarded as the rightful founder of the noble Bakri-Siddiqi family in the North African region, as well as the person who transformed it into a center of knowledge, benevolence, and righteousness.
