Muhammad Bin Talha Al-Darahim

Muhammad Bin Talha Al-Darahim (1): Muhammad Bin Talha Bin Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq of Madinah was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh, and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. He was the governor of Makkah Al-Mukarramah for the Umayyad Caliph Umar Bin Abdul-Aziz. Other reports, however, say that he was actually a deputy to the Umayyad governor of Makkah (Abdul-Aziz Bin Abdullah Bin Khalid Bin Usaid) during his second term governing Makkah (2).

Muhammad Bin Talha’s daughter, Umm Salama, married Musa Al-Jun Bin Abdullah Al-Mahdh Bin Al-Hasan Al-Mathni Bin Al-Hasan (who was a matrilineal descendant of the Prophet through his grandson, Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him and his descendants), and bore him children.

Muhammad Bin Talha narrated on the authority of his father, while Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Juraij, and Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Maliki narrated on his authority. One of Muhammad Bin Talha’s wives was Rita Bint Al-Mughira Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Harith Bin Hisham Bin Al-Mughira of the tribe of Makhzoum.

Muhammad Bin Talha was known as “The Winner, Son of the Winner.”

Al-Zubayr Bin Bakkar said: Abbas Bin Abi Bakr Bin Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq told me: He and Umar Bin Abdul-Aziz raced horses against each other in Madinah. There was a horse that belonged to Muhammad Bin Talha Bin Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq, and a horse that belonged to a man from Jaad. The horse from Jaad was ahead (3), so he recited the following verses:

A lofty goal has been set, so who is up to the challenge?

We are the ones who will achieve it, and we are up to it.

Even if birds are sent, we will arrive before them.

Within a matter of minutes, Muhammad Bin Talha’s horse caught up with him and passed him, making him the winner. Umar Bin Abdul-Aziz then told the man from Jaad: By Allah, the son of the Winner (He Who Hastened to Do Good Deeds) has beat you.
