Abdel-Rahman the Jurist, Son of Al-Qasim the Jurist

Abdel-Rahman the Jurist, Son of Al-Qasim the Jurist (1): Born in Madinah, Abdel-Rahman the Jurist, son of Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq the Jurist, was known as Abu Muhammad and was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh. His mother was Qurayba Bint Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq.

Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim was a prominent citizen of Madinah, known for his great knowledge and generosity as well as his mastery of jurisprudence, the ability to memorize, and his dedication to accuracy. He taught Nafi’, one of the seven luminary reciters of the Qur’an, and Malik Bin Anas narrated on his authority. He was born during the lifetime of The Mother of the Believers, Aisha.

Yahya, the son of Imam Malik Bin Anas, said regarding him that no one was able to fill his father’s position like Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with them all, and that he was the best person of his generation.

In Kitab Al-Manasik of his sahih compilation, Al-Bukhari also said: “Ali Bin Abdullah told us that Sufyan told us that Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim, who was the best person of his generation, told us that he heard his father, who was the best person of his generation, saying: ‘I heard Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, saying: ‘I treated Allah’s Messenger, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, with these two hands of mine.’’”

People were in agreement regarding their great admiration and respect for Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim, noting his exemplary leadership, trustworthiness, piety, and tremendous knowledge.

It was reported that Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim once helped his father, Al-Qasim, regarding a dispute with Ibn Abi Ateeq (Atiq), and that his mother, who was the daughter of Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq, told him: “You sided with your father against your uncle? By Allah, you will lie down do that I can step on your neck!” Upon hearing this, he did lie down for her so that she could step on his neck, whereupon Al-Qasim told her: “O Mother of Abdel-Rahman, if someone wants his children to disobey him, they will.”

Among Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim’s children were Isma’il and Asma’ (whose mother was Habbana Bint Abdel-Rahman, an Ansar from the tribe of Aws), and Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman, who was appointed Chief Justice of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, and whose mother was Aatikah Bint Saleh Bin Ibrahim Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin ‘Awf.

Abdel-Rahman died in the area of Al-Fadaein in the Levant (currently located in Jordan’s Mafraq governorate) in 126 AH (744 AD) while he was on his way to see Al-Walid Bin Yazid Bin Abdel-Malik of the Umayyad Dynasty, becoming ill there before he passed away. Other sources say that he died after that during the reign of Marwan Bin Muhammad of the Umayyad Dynasty, who was killed in 131 AH, but it is more likely that he died in Al-Fadaein. Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim’s seal was engraved with both his name and that of his father.
