القاسم بن محمد بن أبي بكر الصديق

Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq (1): Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh, and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him. He was called Abu Muhammad, and according to some sources, Abu Abdel-Rahman. Ibn Sa’d said that his mother was a concubine named Sawda.

Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad was born during the reign of Uthman Bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. A pious role-model who narrated numerous hadiths, he was among the best of the jurists and trustworthy narrators found among the Tabi’een (contemporaries of the Sahaba). He grew up at the knee of his paternal aunt Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, so he had the opportunity to listen to her and hear her speak and was the most knowledgeable person regarding her narrations. It was reported that Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad was the best person of his generation. He was also one of the seven jurists of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah.

Within the family of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, Al-Qasim was the person who most closely resembled Abu Bakr. On the authority of Muhammad Bin Khalid Bin Al-Zubair, he said: “I was at the home of Abdullah Bin Al-Zubair when Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq asked for permission to enter. Abdullah Bin Al-Zubair said: ‘Didn’t I just see him recently?’ Al-Qasim said: ‘I wanted to talk to him about something I need.’ He said: ‘Let him in.’ Then when he entered upon him, Ibn Al-Zubair told him: ‘What is it?’ He said: ‘Such-and-such person died, and we were saying that he was Aisha’s servant.’ He said: ‘No, he was not a servant of yours. He was a servant of Bani Janda’.’ Then Al-Qasim left, whereupon Abdullah Bin Al-Zubair looked at him and said: ‘I have not seen any descendant of Abu Bakr who resembled him as much as this young man.’”

Abdullah Bin Abi Ateeq Muhammad Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq said “O son of Uthman’s killer” to Al-Qasim one day, whereupon Sa’id Ibn Al-Musayyib told him: “How could you say this? By Allah, Al-Qasim is the best of you, and his father Muhammad was the best of you, so he is the best of you and the son of the best of you.” Umar Bin Abdul-Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding him: “If I could appoint a successor, I would appoint one of two men: Uaimish of Bani Taym (meaning Al-Qasim the Jurist), or Sahib Al-A’was (meaning Isma’il Bin ‘Amr Bin Sa’id Bin Al-Aas Bin Abi Uhaiha Sa’id Bin Al-Aas Bin Umaya).”

Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Muawiya, Aisha, and other Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, while numerous individuals from the Tabi’een narrated on his authority, including Nafi’ (a servant of Ibn Umar), Ibn Abi Malika, Al-Zuhri, and others – all of whom were in agreement regarding their great admiration and respect for Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad, noting his trustworthiness as a narrator and his exemplary leadership.

Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad died in Qadid while performing either Hajj or Umrah – and he was buried in Al-Mushalal, three miles away, between Makkah and Madinah. He died in 106 AH, although some sources say his death took place in 107, 108, or 112 AH. He died blind at the age of 70 or 72, and when he was on his deathbed, it was reported that he said: “You are my Lord, my Sufficiency, and my Master.” He also said: “Make the clothes that I prayed in my burial shroud – my shirt, my waist-wrapper, and my cloak. This is how Abu Bakr was shrouded, and those who are alive are in greater need of new things.”

A saying attributed to Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad is: “Part of a man’s dignity for himself is saying only that which he has knowledge of.”
