Ali Al-Ma’arri Al-Bakri

Ali Al-Ma’arri Al-Bakri (1): Al-‘Ala’ Ali Bin Al-Shams Muhammad Bin Al-Najm Abdul-Khaleq Bin Ahmed Bin Abi Bakr Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Al-Fawaris Bin Ali Bin Ahmed Bin Umar Bin Qatami of Al-Ma’arra and Aleppo was a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq whose ancestry could be traced back to the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh. He was known as “Ibn Al-Wardi” due to his great-great grandfather (Abu Bakr) being the brother of the grandfather of Sheikh Zain Al-Din Umar Bin Muthaffar Bin Umar Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Al-Fawaris Ibn Al-Wardi. He followed the Shafi’i school of thought and was blind.

Ali Al-Ma’arri was born in Al-Ma’arra in the middle of Sha’ban of 771 AH. He received hadiths from Al-Shihab Bin Al-Marhal and learned jurisprudence from him. He also gave him permission to issue fatwas and teach. He transmitted hadiths, and several righteous people received hadiths from him. He was an imam, scholar, and researcher who worked with great precision and was a master of many different disciplines. He was highly intelligent and quick-witted. He knew Al-Hawi by heart and could recite from it accurately due to his great knowledge of it. He could also recite from Ghalib Al-Bahjah. He died in Aleppo in Dhul Hijjah of 849 AH and was buried there in Al-Shuhada’ Al-Salahin cemetery, near his grandfather’s paternal uncle, outside of Bab Al-Maqam.
