Sharaf Al-Din Abdullah Ibn Al-Jawzi
Sharaf Al-Din Abdullah Ibn Al-Jawzi (1): Al-Sahib Sharaf Al-Din Abdullah Bin Muhi Al-Din Yusuf Bin Jamal Al-Din Abdel-Rahman Ibn Al-Jawzi was from the tribe of Quraysh and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. He was a pious nobleman and an honorable leader who was one of the most distinguished leaders of his time. He frequently recited the Qur’an and was gifted with great scholarly knowledge as well as the capacity to convey it to others. He oversaw the institution of hisbah (regulating the marketplace) in Baghdad.
Caliph Al-Musta’sim Billah sent Sharaf Al-Din to Hulagu in Khorasan. Upon his return, he told of Hulagu’s intention to head towards Iraq with a great army. They did not prepare to face him, however, and when Al-Musta’sim was confronted by Hulagu, he asked Sharaf Al-Din to send someone to hand over Khuzestan. Sharaf Al-Din thus did this with the approval of the caliph, heading there with a group of Mongols to advise the people who lived there of the situation. When he returned, however, Hulagu had already left Baghdad after completely destroying it. He then encountered him in Asadabad. Hulagu had been informed of Sharaf Al-Din’s advice to the people of Khuzestan. He disliked this and thus killed Sharaf Al-Din in Asadabad in 656 AH.
