Jamal Al-Din Al-Muhtasib Ibn Al-Jawzi
Jamal Al-Din Al-Muhtasib Ibn Al-Jawzi (1): Abu Al-Faraj Jamal Al-Din Abdel-Rahman Bin Muhi Al-Din Yusuf Bin Jamal Al-Din Abdel-Rahman Ibn Al-Jawzi was from the tribe of Quraysh and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq who was born in 606 AH. He received hadiths, preached, and composed letters on behalf of the royal court to Egypt. He oversaw the institution of hisbah (regulating the marketplace) in Baghdad and transmitted hadiths in Egypt and Baghdad. He received hadiths from Abi Muhammad Abdel-Aziz Bin Maali Bin Manina and others, and was educated in the Mustansiriya Madrasah according to the madhab of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on him. He was a great leader as well as a prominent figure in Baghdad who was amongst the empire’s most distinguished men. In Safar of 656 AH, he was martyred in Baghdad along with his father and brothers.
Jamal Al-Din authored some works of poetry, including a poem in praise of the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in which he said (in reference to the Prophet, who was orphaned as a young boy) that “the best of pearls are the orphans.”
