Taj Al-Din Al-Sharishi

Taj Al-Din Al-Sharishi (1): The Sufi Maliki scholar and grammarian, Ahmed Bin Muhammad Bin Ahmed Bin Muhammad Bin Ahmed Bin Khalaf, was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh, and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq known as Abu Al-Abbas Taj Al-Din Al-Sharishi Al-Salawi. He was born in Salé near Rabat, Morocco in 581 AH (1185 AD) and raised in Marrakesh. He was educated in Marrakesh, Fes, and Andalusia and was an expert in ʿIlm al-Kalam (the science of discourse) and the fundamentals of jurisprudence. He performed the Hajj pilgrimage and received knowledge from the scholars of Baghdad, Egypt, and other places. He became a Sufi through his contact with Shahab Al-Din Abi Hafs Al-Suhrawardi and was famous for a Sufi poem he wrote called Anwar Al-Sara’ir wa Sara’ir Al-Anwar. He settled in Faiyum, Egypt and died there in Rabi’ Al-Awwal of 641 AH (1243 AD), although some sources place his death in the middle of Safar of 643 AH.

Although Al-Maqrizi mentioned in the biography of Taj Al-Din Ahmed Bin Muhammad Bin Ahmed Bin Muhammad Bin Khalaf Al-Sharishi that appears in Al-Muqaffa Al-Kabir that he was “from Bani Bakr Bin Wa’el,” and that he was “born in 583 AH and died in 640 AH” (2), we think that perhaps Al-Maqrizi was mistaken due to the many references and sources that said he was a Bakri (descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq) whose lineage can be traced back to the tribe of Quraysh.
