Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi

Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi (1): The Shafi’i scholar Abu Abdullah Fakhr Al-Din Muhammad Bin Umar Bin Al-Husayn Bin Al-Hasan Bin Ali of Tabaristan was from the tribe of Quraysh and a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq who was also known as Ibn Khatib Al-Ray. He was born in Ray, but later lived in Herat. His ancestors can be traced to both Makkah and Tabaristan. He should not be confused with the famous physician, Abu Bakr Al-Razi Al-Farisi (d. 311 AH).

Sheikh Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi Al-Bakri of Quraysh was born in Ray in either 543 or 544 AH (1150 AD). His ancestors hailed from Tabaristan, and he was born in Ray, from which the name Al-Razi is derived. He traveled to Khwarezm, Transoxiana, and Khorasan and died in Herat on a Monday, on the day of Eid Al-Fitr, in 606 AH (1210 AD).

Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi was a renowned imam and Qur’an exegetist whose generation had no equal when it came to the science of logic, hadith transmission, and knowledge of the first generations of Muslims. He studied both the religious and intellectual sciences, delving deeply into logic and philosophy and achieving prominence in the field of discourse. In all of these domains, he authored books, expositions, and commentaries. He received knowledge from his father, Imam Diaa Al-Din Umar, and was a student of “Muhi Al-Sunnah” (Reviver of the Sunnah), Sheikh Abi Muhammad Al-Baghawi.

Khwarazm-Shah used to go to Sheikh Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi for knowledge, and many people sought out his books during his lifetime to study them. He was sharp-witted, extremely intelligent, and knowledgeable about both medicine and literature. He also had great knowledge about lineages. He wrote poetry in both Persian and Arabic and was a brilliant preacher in both languages.

Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi’s authored works include: Mafatih Al-Ghayb (an exegesis of the Noble Qur’an), Lawami’ Al-Bayyinat fi Sharh Asma’ Allah Ta’ala wa-al-Sifat, Ma’alim Usul Al-Din, Muhassal Afkar Al-Mutaqaddimin wa-‘l-Muta’akhkhirin min Al-‘Ulama’ wa-‘l-Hukama’ wa-’l-Mutakallimin, Masa’il Al-Khamsun fi Usul Al-Kalam, Al-Ayyat Al-Bayyinat, ‘Ismat Al-Anbiya’, Al-I’rab, Asrar Al-Tanzil (on monotheism), Al-Mabahith Ul-Mashriqia, Anmuthaj Al-Ulum, Asas Al-Taqdis (a treatise on monotheism), Al-Matalib Al-‘Aliya (discourse), Al-Mahsul fi ‘Ilm Al-Usul, Nihayat Al-Ijaz fi Dirayat Al-Ijaz (rhetoric), Al-Sirr Al-Maktum fi Mukhatabat Al-Nujum, Al-Arba’un fi Usul Al-Din, Nihayat Al-‘Uqul fi Dirayat Al-Usul, Al-Qadha’ wal Qadar, Al-Khalq wa Al-Ba’th, Al-Firasa, Al-Bayan wa Al-Burhan, Tahdhib Al-Dala’il, Al-Mulakhas (philosophy), Al-Nafs, Al-Nubuwat, Kitab Asma’ Allah Al-Husna, Ta’jiz Al-Falasifah (in Persian), Al-Shajara Al-Mubaraka fi Ansab Al-Talibiya (lineages), and others.
