Abu Najib Al-Suhrawardi (1): Shaykh Al-Islam and Mufti of the “Two Iraqs,” Abu Al-Najib Diaa Al-Din Abdul-Qahir Bin Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Abdullah Abi Ja’far Amuwiah Bin Saad Bin Al-Hasan Bin Al-Qasim Bin Al-Nadhr Bin Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abdullah Bin Abdel-Rahman Bin Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq Al-Suhrawardi was a descendant of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. The name Al-Suhrawardi can be traced back to Sohrevard, a city near Zanjan.

Abu Najib Al-Suhrawardi was a Sufi Master, a Shafi’i jurist, and a preacher. A prominent figure of his time, he was a role-model of exemplary character known as a pious worshipper. He was born around 490 AH (1097 AD) and went to Baghdad. He received hadiths from Ibn Nabhan and others. He was educated in the Nizamiyyah under the tutelage of Al-Mayhani and was later appointed as its custodian. He left the Nizamiyyah, however, isolating himself in order to build a ribat (spiritual retreat). Many people became disciples of his, and Abu Hafs Shahab Al-Din Al-Suhrawardi was one of his students. He was a Shafi’i scholar and a prominent Sufi figure.

Ibn Al-Ahdal called Abu Najib Al-Suhrawardi the “Bakri of Quraysh,” saying: Between him and Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq are twelve men. He acquired such a high level of knowledge that he was called the Mufti of the Two Iraqs and a role-model for both sides. He authored the major work Adab Al-Muridin as well as Sharh Al-Asma’ Al-Husna and Gharib Al-Masabih. He died in Baghdad in Jumada Al-Thani of 563 AH (1168 AD) at the age of 73.
