Asma Bint Umais, Mother of Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq

Asma Bint Umais (1): As-Sayyida Asma Bint Umais Bin Ma’ad Bin Taym Bin Al-Harith of the tribe of Khathaam was the mother of Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him and his father.

Asma embraced Islam before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, entered the home of Al-Arqam in Makkah. She pledged her allegiance to the Prophet and emigrated to the land of Abyssinia with her husband, Ja’far Bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, whom she bore Abdullah, Muhammad, and Awn.

After her husband Ja’far was martyred, she married Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him and bore him Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr. After the death of Abu Bakr, she married Ali Bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, and bore him Yahya and Awn.

Asma Bint Umais died in 38 AH. Some sources place her death around 40 AH, while others say it was sometime between 51 and 60 AH, but the year 38 AH is more likely.

Asma narrated sixty hadiths on the authority of the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, while two of her sons (Abdullah and Awn, the sons of Ja’far Bin Abi Talib), her grandson (Al-Qasim Bin Muhammad Bin Abi Bakr), her granddaughter (Umm Awn Bint Muhammad Bin Ja’far), and others all narrated on her authority.

Umar Bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to ask Asma Bint Umais about dream interpretation and transmitted things related to this on her authority. He also allotted her a pension of a thousand dirhams. She was the maternal half-sister of the Mother of the Believers, Maymuna Bint Al-Harith Al-Hilaliya, and Umm Al-Fadl, the wife of Al-Abbas Bin Abdul-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him.
