Umm Ul-Khair, Mother of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (1): Umm Ul-Khair (“The Mother of Goodness”) was the mother of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq. Her name was Salma, and according to some sources: “Laila” Bint Sakhar Bin ‘Amr Bin Ka’ab Bin Sa’ad Bin Taym Bin Murrah Bin Ka’ab Bin Lu’ay Bin Ghalib. Umm Ul-Khair was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh, and she embraced Islam at the start of the Call to Islam along with her son, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both.

It was narrated on the authority of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said: “When Abu Bakr embraced Islam, he stood to give a speech, and the beginning of his speech was a call to Allah and His Messenger – so the polytheists revolted against Abu Bakr, beating him severely. Utbah Bin Rab’ah came down close to him and beat him with a pair of spiked shoes, striking him in the face with them, and sitting on Abu Bakr’s stomach until his nose became indiscernible from his face. So Banu Taym came and carried Abu Bakr in a thobe until they brought him home, certain he was dead. His father and Banu Taym spoke to him, and he answered them at the end of the day, saying:

“‘What happened to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family?’ Thereupon they insulted him with their words and rebuked him and left him, but he continued asking about the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, until he was carried to him.

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, knelt down beside him, kissing him – and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, showed great sympathy for him.

“Then Abu Bakr said: ‘Oh, Messenger of Allah, this is my mother, and you are blessed, so supplicate for her and invite her to Islam so that Allah may rescue her from Hellfire through you.’

“So, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, supplicated to Allah the Almighty for her, whereupon she embraced Islam.” [End of Citation]

It was narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, that he said (2): “The mother of Abu Bakr, the mother of Uthman, the mother of Talha, the mother of Al-Zubair, the mother of Abdel-Rahman Bin ‘Awf, and the mother of Ammar Bin Yasir embraced Islam.” [End of Citation] It has also been reported that Umm Ul-Khair embraced Islam early in the home of Al-Arqam Bin Abi’l-Arqam, pledging loyalty to the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and dying as a Muslim. When Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away, both of his parents, Abu Quhafa and Umm Ul-Khair, inherited from him. Although the date of her death is not known, Umm Ul-Khair passed away during the Caliphate of Al-Farooq Umar, before the death of Abu Quhafa.
